Should You Pay For Kitchen Design Services?

Some kitchen and bath design centers charge for design services, many others do not.  At KRB Kitchen and Bath Design Center, we do charge to help you design your kitchen or bath renovation.  Even if you are only looking to buy your cabinets from us, but plan on installing them yourself or have a contractor install them for you, we charge to help you design your kitchen cabinet and countertops layout as well.  Whether you should pay for design services is really up to you.  Of course, as professional kitchen and bath industry specialists, we think you should pay for professional design to insure you get the services you need from real professionals.

As the old saying goes; “You get what you pay for”.

If you are simply replacing your kitchen cabinets and counters, or perhaps your bathroom vanity and top, you might do fine working with a company offering free design.  In those examples, as long as the existing spaces and cabinetry layout work for you, and there is no need to change the layout, design services are probably not needed. On the other hand, if you want to remodel your kitchen or bathroom to create a different look, feel and/or change how you use the space, professional design plays an important role. It can help you make sure your investment of time and money, as well as the disturbance to your home and life, are all worth the effort in the end.

Free design can come with risks

We review a lot of “free designs” that make their way into our showroom.   We have found two common factors with “free designs”. One is that the customer is not happy with the free design they already have, and they are looking for our help to improve it.  The other issue is we see design flaws that customers would otherwise not realize until their new kitchen and or bath has been completed.  Below is just a short list of the design flaws we see in many free designs.  They are all things we as professionals consider with every design we create.

  • Lack of adequate counter space between appliances and sink(s).
  • Doors, drawers and or cabinet hardware interfering with each other at inside corners.
  • Height of the microwave is not safe for removing hot items and or for children to use safely.
  • Inadequate lighting above critical work areas.
  • Electrical outlets missing but needed to serve the customer’s intended use and or to meet code requirements.
  • A lack of adequate storage space where it is actually needed.
